The Milky Way in Cygnus is awe inspiring at any time but from these dark skies the sight is fantastic! This shot shows all three stars that make up the “Summer Triangle”, Deneb, Vega and Altair. Once you look past the billowing star clouds you can see the North American Nebula (NGC 7000), the nebulosity around Gamma Cygni, the Veil Nebula (if you look very close!), The Cygnus Star Chain, Sagitta – the Arrow and Brocchi’s Cluster, also known as the “Coathanger” This shot was taken using my Canon F1 camera piggyback on my Meade 8” SCT. I used a 24mm f2.8 lens – stopped down to f4 for this 20 minute unguided exposure on Kodak Ektapress PJ400 film. The dark area in the lower right is the telescope tube! |
